CANNABIS TERMINOLOGY

Access Point

  • An access point (typically called a dispensary) is a state authorized location where licensed patients can purchase medical marijuana and is highly regulated.

Blunt

  • A blunt is made by wrapping marijuana flower in a cigar paper or cigarillo paper. They can hold larger amounts of marijuana than a joint and are more commonly used among larger groups of people.

 

Bong

  • A bong is a large glass, ceramic, or plastic pipe that is used to smoke cannabis flower. It uses water to filter and cool the smoke prior to inhalation and is similar to a hookah.

 

Bowl

  • A bowl is a smaller smoking apparatus that consists of a compartment where cannabis flower is loaded and burned on one end, with a mouthpiece on the opposite end to inhale smoke through.

 

Budtender

  • A budtender is a knowledgeable dispensary employee who works behind the counter and showcases in a dispensary. They will answer any questions and guide you through your cannabis experience.

 

Butane Hash Oil (BHO)

  • Butane hash oil is created by dissolving marijuana with a butane solvent, which results in a thick, sticky concentrate. The THC levels in BHO are much higher than that of marijuana flowers. It is also often referred to as “dabs” or “wax”.

 

Cannabidiol

  •  Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is a molecule that is extracted from the marijuana plant and processed into a variety of products such as oils, topicals, and tinctures. CBD has become increasingly popular and is ideal for those who seek the benefits of marijuana without the psychoactive effects ( the “high”).

 

Cannabis

  • Cannabis refers to three different plants with psychoactive properties, known as cannabis sativa, cannabis indica, and cannabis ruderalis. The two most commonly used are cannabis sativa and cannabis indica. The flower of these plants are harvested and dried and result in what most people refer to as marijuana. They offer countless benefits and are used to a wide range of medical conditions.

 

CO2 Oil

  • CO2 oil is a concentrate that is similar to butane hash oil, but is less sticky and more oily. It is created by pressurizing liquid or gas CO2 to anything over 1078 PSI, known as “super critical” state, and passing it through marijuana.

 

Concentrates

  • A concentrate is a purified and potent form of cannabis product refined from cannabis flowers. Different forms of concentrates include hash, kief, or hash oil. Concentrates will consist of much higher levels of THC than that of flowers.

 

Dabs

  • A Dab is a slang term used when referring to a smaller portion of concentrate, such as hash oil, wax, or shatter. It is consumed by “dabbing” with a heat source and a rig to produce a vapor, which is then inhaled.

 

Dank

  • Dank is a slang term used to describe sticky, high-quality cannabis with a strong aroma.

 

Dispensary

  • A Dispensary is a store that can legally sell marijuana in a variety of forms, in addition to other marijuana related products, paraphernalia, and merchandise. Depending on your state, one may find medical and recreational dispensaries, which offer products to medical marijuana patients or to the public.

 

Edibles

  • Edibles are marijuana-infused products that are consumed orally. Some of the most common forms of edibles include baked goods and candy, however you may also find it in the form of coffee, soda, and several other variations. Consuming an edible produces a different high in comparison to smoking marijuana because it is digested. This results in a more intense and longer lasting high.

 

Flowers

  • The flowers of a cannabis plant refer to the hairy, often sticky bud or parts of the plant that are harvested to consume in different marijuana products.

 

Hash/Hash Oil

  • Hash or hashish is derived from cannabis plants and may be used for consumption. It is produced by gather the trichomes using a dry sieve or water extraction method, which is then able to be pressed and consumed. The powder that is created is very potent, as trichomes contain high levels of cannabinoids (typically THC or CBD).

 

Hemp

  • Hemp is derived from Cannabis sativa, but only contains a small amount of the psychoactive ingredient THC. It can be commercially produced to make a variety of products such as paper, rope, food, building materials, beauty products, and numerous other products.

 

Hybrid

  • A hybrid is a cross between two genetically different strains of cannabis. They can happen randomly or intentionally, but are usually done to mix desired traits of different plants.

 

Joint

  • A joint is a rolled cigarette filled with marijuana. Typically it is rolled in a very thin, clean-burning rolling paper. They are often a preferred method to smoke due to the convenience of easily being able to roll them, they are portable, and easy to discard.

 

Kief

  • Kief is a result of separating trichomes from the marijuana plant. It holds the most amounts of cannabinoids, resulting in a very potent and pure form of concentrate.

 

Marijuana

  • Marijuana is a broad word for a plant and its flowers that contain several psychoactive ingredients like THC and CBD. It can be found in several different forms such as dried flower, concentrates, hashish, tinctures, and can also be extracted and infused into food.

 

Pre-roll

  • A pre-roll is a term that refers to a pre-rolled marijuana cigarette, also known as a joint. Many dispensaries carry an inventory of pre-rolls available for purchase.

 

Strain

  • A cannabis strain is a specific type of plant species, either in a pure or hybrid variety such as sativa or indica. Many strains are created to produce specific desired traits and are typically named by their breeders. The names frequently reflect the appearance, desired feeling, or place of origin.

 

THC

  • THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the most potent and most recognized cannabinoid in the marijuana plant. It is known for its psychoactive effects, which produce a high in its consumer. Research has proved THC to be highly effective in treating a variety of medical conditions.

 

Topical

  • A topical is a product that has been infused with an extraction of cannabis and is applied to the outside of the body, such as a lotion or a cream. Despite containing cannabinoid extracts like THC, these products will not get you high. It is absorbed through the skin and may help with a variety of medical problems such as muscle pain, soreness and dry skin.

 

Vape Pen

  • A Vaporizer pen is a small version of a regular vaporizer. It is portable and typically uses cartridges that are pre-filled with different types of cannabis concentrate.  

 

Wax

  • Wax is a concentrated form of marijuana that is created by dissolving the plant in a solvent.

 

Weed
